After a devastating accident, a disabled mother and daughter duo try to stay afloat as they experience a new reality and sense of time

SYNOPSIS

Afloat is an intimate short film about a Black mother and daughter navigating love, disability, and survival after a devastating accident. Joy, a young professional, juggles the relentless pace of her high-pressure workplace while also serving as her mother Denise’s primary caregiver. Her days race by in anxious bursts—fragmented, restless, and fast—while Denise’s unfold in a suspended stillness, marked by depression and memory loss.

The film uses visual rhythm as its heartbeat: Joy’s world is captured through sharper cuts, faster frame rates, and constant interruptions, while Denise’s is portrayed with lingering takes, softened soundscapes, and slowed pacing. Water imagery threads throughout, symbolizing both danger and serenity, anchoring the central metaphor of staying afloat.

With minimal dialogue and immersive sound design, Afloat is a sensory portrait of burnout and caregiving. Rather than offering a neat resolution, the film invites viewers to feel the distorted passage of time between mother and daughter, revealing the quiet heroics of showing up for one another even while sinking.

MORE ABOUT THIS PROJECT

Afloat speaks to an all-too-common but underrepresented reality: the intergenerational caregiving burdens that fall disproportionately on Black women, and the invisible burnout that comes with them. In many BIPOC communities, younger generations are often thrust into caretaker roles earlier in life due to racial and socioeconomic inequities. This “resilience” is rarely celebrated in a way that honors the emotional cost—it’s normalized, expected, and quietly endured.

Our story examines the overlap between high-performance anxiety, depression, disability, and generational responsibility. It also engages with the distorted ways time is experienced under these pressures: for Joy, time speeds toward burnout; for Denise, it slows to an almost unbearable crawl. The result is a portrait of survival that exists outside of traditional “overcoming” narratives—one that validates exhaustion as much as it honors perseverance.

By centering a disabled mother and her daughter in a story that resists pity or oversimplification, Afloat challenges the way film typically frames caregiving and disability. It speaks directly to caregivers, disabled audiences, and anyone who has ever felt “lonely in their strength.”
