About the Challenge
Our quarterly film challenges give members 72 hours to shoot, edit, and submit — backed by short-term gear loans, small grants, and help with publicity. It's a chance to learn, grow, and make something great alongside the community.
Every challenge runs on three principles: clear collaboration between cast and crew, creative constraints sent out in advance, and a reminder that movies get made when we stop overthinking and just start shooting.
FAQ
Can I write my film before the 72 hours begins?
Yes — concept and writing are fine in advance. Shooting and editing must happen within the 72-hour window.
Do I have to shoot and edit within the 72 hours?
Yes — all filming and editing must take place within the challenge window to be eligible for prizes.
Will there be equipment to borrow?
Yes — limited gear and software packages are available free through sponsors, and change each edition. Using partner gear requires insurance.
Do I need production insurance to borrow gear?
Yes — a certificate of insurance is required, typically $75–150 through our partner, We Make Movies.
Am I allowed to work with whoever I want?
Yes — bring your own team, or find collaborators through our Crew Sheet once registered.
What if I don't already have a team?
No team required — the Crew Sheet is a resource to help you find collaborators, not a requirement to participate.
Can I work by myself?
Yes — you're welcome to create your film independently, though collaboration is encouraged.
Are there prizes?
Yes — prizes vary by edition based on sponsor involvement and are announced via email, newsletter, and social channels.
Can we rehearse before the challenge begins?
Yes, but any footage used in your final submitted film must be shot during the challenge window.
Will I be allowed to submit my film to festivals?
Yes — you retain full rights to your film and can submit it to festivals afterward.
Can I shoot a proof of concept for a larger project?
Yes — using the challenge to develop a proof of concept is welcomed.
Do I have to use specific software for editing and color grading?
Yes — as Blackmagic Design partners, all submissions must be edited and color graded in DaVinci Resolve.
What's the official timeline for the challenge?
Challenges run quarterly, with dates announced via our website, calendar, socials, and email to registered participants.
