CFA Launches the NOT Work-in-Progress (WIP) Lab for Short Filmmakers

At Cinematography for Actors (CFA), we’ve spent the past few years building a home for filmmakers—from on-set workshops and educational panels to vibrant community events that connect crew and talent. Now, we’re turning our attention to a crucial but often overlooked stage of the creative process: post-production.

Introducing the NOT Work-in-Progress (WIP) Lab—a new program designed specifically for short filmmakers who are close to the finish line and want to fine-tune their cuts before releasing them into the world.

What is NOT WIP Lab?

This isn’t a “show-and-tell.” It’s a heart-centered, professional-grade test screening experience—created for filmmakers who want real feedback, real growth, and real connection.

Each monthly lab session includes:

  • Screenings of selected short films

  • Live feedback from a thoughtful, creative audience

  • A masterclass led by an industry mentor (tailored to what filmmakers need most)

  • Opportunities to connect and collaborate with fellow creatives

Our goal is to replicate the professional test screening process, allowing filmmakers to gain audience-driven insights that go beyond their immediate network. Whether you’re looking for story clarity, pacing notes, or honest emotional response, this lab is built to help you take the next step with confidence.

Who Can Apply?

The NOT WIP Lab is open to:

  • Short filmmakers with a current cut of their film (any genre welcome)

  • Creatives looking for actionable feedback in a supportive environment

  • Local LA-based filmmakers (sessions take place at CFA Studio)

We especially encourage submissions from BIPOC, LGBTQIA+, disabled, and low-income filmmakers—we want to hear your stories.

First Session: May 2025
Our first lab session is happening in the final week of May 2025, and applications are officially open now.
