LOGLINE

Ready to steer her love life into the right lane, Brigid prepares for a perfect reunion with her ex Nayel. Just as the current starts sweeping them away, Nayel discharges a torpedo of news that will change them forever.

SYNOPSIS

Brigid takes a trip to Washington D.C. for her sister's bridal shower. While in town, she schedules a dinner date with her ex-boyfriend, Nayel. They both carry a torch for each other and meet with hope, nerves, and excitement as they begin to update each other on their current life status. They touch on their families, job status, and how their upbringings of Catholic Irish-American and Indian-American Muslim share more similarities than differences.

During the conversation, Brigid gives Nayel a gift with a handwritten card. Nayel pockets the card, opens the gift, and sees that there is still an opening for the two to begin again. It is in this moment, Nayel must disclose that he has just learned of an early pregnancy from a one-night stand and they will be marrying, despite not being in love. This high-stakes conversation is dotted by interruptions by a waiter at the most uncomfortable of moments, breaking the tension and allowing the couple to regulate their emotions. In the end they leave dinner, wishing each other well.

As Nayel reaches for his car keys, he discovers the card from Brigid he never opened. Brigid watches him read the card and slips away before he looks up. The two part ways without speaking another word to each other.

MORE ABOUT THIS PROJECT

"A Boat in the Storm" was inspired by my personal experiences in a long-term relationship in my early adulthood. This relationship proved very formative for me, taking place shortly after the events of 9/11 and challenging the stereotypes of political, religious, and racial of the time.

Outside of the socio-political ramifications of the relationship, there is a comfortability between the characters and the want for traditional family structure These young professionals share overarching goals of security, career, marriage, and children. This piece is an exploration of how first loves impact how we grow as adults, build empathy, and teach us to accept each other where we are in our lives, while also allowing us to be hopeful and naive in the wonder of "what could happen."

Since the two decades after this dinner, I often wonder what could have happened if "Brigid" and "Nayel" made different choices, how humans manage to keep themselves in a regulated emotional status while almost vomiting from the rug being pulled out from under them, and how one can carry love for another person while moving into a life without them.

"A Boat in the Storm" will create important conversations about cross-cultural relationships, similarities between different Abrahamic religions, and how all of us are human at the core.
